Washington, D.C., is the capital of the United States under the jurisdiction of Congress. The Residence Act of 1790 established that the location of the capital along the Potomac River formed by a cession of territories in Maryland and Virginia. By March 1791, Congress further specified that the capital occupy a ten-square mile area that included Georgetown, the Anacostia River, and Alexandria.
There were five jurisdictions with separate municipal structures within the District of Columbia: Georgetown, Washington City, Washington County, Alexandria, and Alexandria County. In 1846, Alexandria and Alexandria County were retroceded to Virginia. At that time, the District of Columbia assumed its present-day borders. n 1871, Congress consolidated the governments of Washington City, Washington County, and Georgetown to create a single government for all of Washington, D.C. - Source Resource
