- Adelaine Campbell, an enslaved female “aged about 28 years” appears in a mortgage certificate. The certificate created a mortgage agreement formalizing the terms of a loan for the sale of 56 people to Henry Johnson. The total amount of the sale was $45,000 covered by five promissory notes of $9,000 at an interest rate of 6% and payable annually to Thomas Mulledy, S.J. of Georgetown College. A down payment of $17,793 was received upon execution of the mortgage agreement; the balance on the promissory notes were due every March between 1845 and 1849.

The total amount of the sale was $45,000 covered by five promissory notes of $9,000 at an interest rate of 6% and payable annually to Thomas Mulledy, S.J., at Georgetown College. The notes were dated November 10, 1838 with due dates as follows: March 1845, March 1846, March 1847, March 1848, and March 1849.
From each note, the following amount was deducted $3,588.60 to cover the down payment of $17,793 for the purchase; a balance of $5,411.40 remained on each of the five notes. (The sum of these payments does not equal $45,000).
Each note was secured by the endorsements of Jesse Batey and Joseph Johnson; 1,245 acres of a plantation in Maringouin in Iberville Parish, Louisiana, served as collateral. (This real estate was purchased from H.M. Thibodeau and adjoined the property of Jesse Batey). - Source Resource
