- Paul C. Cameron (1808-1891), the son of white enslaver Duncan Cameron (1777-1853), was a politician, railroad builder, and plantation owner. In the 1820s, he attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill; he later served on the UNC Board of Trustees and its Building Committee. He inherited significant property from his father and as of 1860, he claimed in ownership more than 1,000 Black people in North Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. He exploited their forced labor for profit in part through human trafficking between plantations he owned.
